Vintage from the 19th century
An extremely rare pair of lotus-type shoes from southern China. This style of detailed, complex embroidery is only seen in articles from the Miao Minority group. These are flat shoes, somewhat wider than most, and measure about 4 inches from heel to toe on the soles. This pair is a rarity due to the finely crafted individual storage units for each shoe. The storage containers are embroidered and stitched exactly as the shoes are, but with no soiling or wear on the outside - bottom - of the soles. The shoes themselves show appropriate wear and soiling on the soles, as does the top - inside - of each storage container that was transferred from the shoes during storage. The Miao practiced a loose foot binding that allowed women to walk and work outside while still showing the perceived attraction of a very small foot. The appearance of tiny feet were desired by the Miao as with many traditional groups, but the effect was mimicked in ways that did not result in the broken bone deformity of the Han women. Here is a great pair to add to a collection
