Vintage from the 1980s

A fine little thangka from Nepal depicting a Dhyani Buddha as Amoghasiddhi, "He Who Unerringly Achieves His Goal.” Amoghasiddhi is the Dhyani Buddha of the north. His color is green, signifying the sun at midnight. He rules over the element of air and embodies the skandha of volition, also called the skandha of mental phenomena or tendencies of mind. This Dhyani Buddha is shown seated in the middle of the Refuge Tree, or Tree of Assembly.

The function of the Refuge Tree in this painting is to depict the transmission lineage of the Amoghasiddhi tradition. This embodies the whole lineage through which the tradition descended, from its ultimate origin down to the main teacher, or Root Lama, at the time when this painting was created.

This is not a new piece and shows evidence of much rolling and unrolling which occurs when smaller portable thangkas are are carried while traveling. It is now framed for preservation and display at a home altar or as a focus for practitioners. Overall good condition with deep saturated , sharp colors. Thangka measures about 11 x 14 inches, mounted in a 16 x 21 inch frame, under glass. Bottom edge anointed with gold leaf.
