Vintage from the 19th century

Standing Buddha, Laos, Luang Prabang Area, early 1800s, or before. A gilded and lacquered wood figure of a standing Buddha on a rounded tiered pedestal. Serene countenance, arms at side with palms facing the thighs in the Gandharattha, or "Calling for Rain" mudra. Statues of Buddha standing, with both arms hanging alongside his body are usually seen in Luang Prabang. All the classic features of northern Laos sculpture are here......"Images of the Laotian Buddha, like all those of S.E. Asia, are dressed with an “antaravasaka”, twined round the hips, and an “uttarasanga” draped like a monastic coat. The “sanghati“ a long fold of cloth, pleated on the left shoulder, is also shown. Buddha’s eyes are lowered, the whites of the eyes are made from a sliver of white material , so that the pupil can be drawn in easily, and gives the impression of contemplation. Hair is represented as small pointed curls. Arms are long, with all the fingers of both hands of an equal length; the size of the ears is extended by huge lobes, which don’t fall vertically." Laotian sculpture is rare, especially when it is sculpted in wood which all eventually wastes away from insects and high humidity. Measures about 28 inches tall. Sound and complete, with age appropriate wear and slight damage. Some historical insect damage to right foot. Overall, a spectacular, attention gathering, eminently displayable piece, of the sort usually seen in galleries and museums.
