Original by Kills Thunder- ''Fire Woman''. Signed and dated by artist. 18x36''H. Acrylic on canvas. Unframed. Dynamic, riveting painting by renowned Sioux artist and beader, Kathy Kills Thunder. This is a most engaging painting, loaded with suggestive symbolism, expressed in KT's inimitable style and presentation. The towering feminine energy arising from the pueblo settlement, dressed in swirling multicolored robes, holds up a traditional seed jar which she contemplates. From the jar's opening a large flock of ravens fly into the sky and are silhouetted against the moon. Women stand in the pueblo below, observing the Goddess spirit as she is absorbed in her work. The seed jar traditionally used by pueblo peoples to preserve seeds for the coming year's planting, combined with the emerging of the mystic ravens suggest a transformation that allows us to reunite with the mysteries of the universe, and to rid ourselves of our inner demons. The sum of these possibilities is preserved by the protective Goddess-of-Place who waits for the perfect time to re energize the timeless principles of Spirit when her human family is ready to remember and take up the old shamanic practices again.

Wow - this is such a great painting! Some elements in this work resonate with the Hawaiian Goddess of the volcano, Pele.

The depicted pottery jar and its designs are unique to the Acoma pueblo in New Mexico. Note a similar seed jar on display in front of this painting. Acoma is one of the longest continuously occupied sites in North America. The jar in these images is listed elsewhere on this site.
