Vintage from the 1950s
A beautifully crafted old Javanese shadow puppet, wayang kulit, of Arjuna, the hero of the Mahabharata epic. In the story, before the epic battle starts, Krishna teaches the warrior Arjuna that the ultimate conflict is not about land and power but about the human spirit. Arjuna becomes a disciple as Krishna says "In the heart of Action you must remain free from all attachments." In turns out that Arjuna is the only undefeated hero in the Mahabharata. Here is an antique example of a Wayang Kulit, crafted from hand painted buffalo hide with well worn wooden dowel handles. Collectible and displayable, with a great patina from wear and long performance use. Overall good/fair condition.Dimensions: 26 x 10 inches. Early to Mid 20th century. Provenance: Collected in the mid 1980's by the late Ira Marks. The wooden base is not included.
