Vintage from before 2000

The inkarewa is a large, round, flat beaded collar up to 12 inches wide, worn by the Maasai women of Southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania and is crafted as a central wedding adornment by the mother of the bride. Traditionally these are constructed from animal hide and small round beads and can take up to a month to complete. The overall design represents the whole of their village and the traditional bridal - wedding collars have a number of beaded strands hanging off the collar which represent the dowry, the number of cows, that will be given for the bride by the groom's family. Necklaces of this general style are identified as everyday adornment for married women, but without the dowry strands. The number of rows worn is an indication of wealth and status. Such necklaces are often worn lying on the chest in a set of three or more. These authentic tribal pieces are magnificent for wall mount display, either as they are or in a frame. Measures about 8 inches from side to side on the collar, with the bead strands at about 41 inches...wow!
