Vintage from the 1930s
A pair of exceedingly rare earrings from the Ilongot people of north Luzon, Philippines. Batling were the ultimate ornamentation for the Ilongot man showing to all that he had completed the essential male right of passage and had taken the head of another human. Only those who had taken heads had the right to wear the batling. Of all the head taking groups throughout se Asia and Oceania, the Luzon groups stand out for the sheer pleasure they took from killing. To quote Maramba, "Because they have been hardened with sacrificial blood, they possess the 'potent red-ness' which, while challenging to other men, is for themselves a sign of well-being and protection'. Likewise, for modern collectors of Philippine tribal artifacts, no collection can be judged complete without a pair of old batling and, perhaps for the diligent, an Ibaloi mummy. Here is a chance for acquiring batling, at least! These measure almost 9 inches on the dangle, a large and showy pair for the Ilongot warrior.
