Vintage from the 19th century

Important illustrations of tattooing in Polynesia in the early 1800s explorations. Set of 6 original plates depicting the complexity and detail of tattoo art and ornamentation at first European contact with the people of Nuku Hiva and New Zealand. For display and scholarship, these prints offer a rare opportunity for artists and body art aficionados to augment personal collections. Wonderful for framing and display. Each print is placed in a black mat, with a printed legend included. NB: The overall mat size is 8 x 10 inches, and the image size is 4 x 6 inches.

A set of 6 matted prints from steel engravings by Montaut, Delaistre, Lesuer, and Cazenave, after drawings by Danvin, comprised of original pages from the 1835 edition ( In French ) published by Firmin Didot Freres, Paris, The Picturesque Universe, History and Description of All Peoples (L'univers pittoresque: histoire et description de tous les peuples). Note that 'Pittoresque' was a word very much in vogue in Europe at the time. Its meaning was linked not only to pictures and paintings but also to pleasure, that is to pleasing images, images that attract the attention of the reader and contribute to educating while entertaining. Titles of these prints include, "Portrait of Nuku Hiva Habitants", "Fully Tattooed Warriors, Nuku Hiva", "Portraits of Men and Women of Nuka Hiva. Polynesia.", "Noukahivien Tattooed Woman", "Leader of Romanzoff Islands. Women of Saltikoff", and "'Tattoo Making, New Zealand". $190.00 for the entire set of 6, frame ready.
