A rare and high quality reverse glass painting from Java, Indonesia depicting a wayang kulit puppet figure. Anantaraja, or more often abbreviated 'Antareja', is a shadow puppet figure from the Javanese performance version of the epic Mahabharata. He is the eldest son of Bima of the Pandava family. Antareja is the eldest son of Bimasena and Nagagini Anantaboga Batara, the snake goddess. The Marriage of Bhima and Nagagini occurred after the Pandavas survived the burning of their Castle when the Kauravas tried to kill the Pandava family. Antareja posses a powerful spell granted by Ananantaboga which makes his tongue magically powerful, killing any creature when he licks its feet or even footsteps. Anatareja is immune to weapons and also has the ring of Mustikabumi, given to him by his mother, ensuring that he cannot die as long as he touches the ground. The ring can be used to revive death outside of one's destiny. Anantaraja can live and walk on the earth. The nature of Anantaraja is of an honest, quiet man, devoted to the elders and dear to the young, self-sacrificing, and beloved by his Creator . He is married with Dewi Ganggi, daughter of King Ganggapranawa, king of the snakes in Tawingnarmada, and berputra Danurwenda Arya. This a beautifully rendered, unique piece of traditional art. Frame measurement is about 17 x 21 inches. shadow box style, with background painted on back panel......gives an interesting perception of depth to an otherwise one dimensional work.
