Vintage from the 1930s
Old hand carved hardwood clyster from western Africa, possibly Cote d'Ivoire. Early 20th century. This bush-medicine oddity was used to administer enemas, a therapeutic procedure employed by various African ethnic groups for centuries. Groups such as the Kuba peoples made clysters and decorated them with incised carved motifs, as they would do to various of their prestige objects such as wine cups. Rare and unique. Measures about 9 inches overall and about 3 inches cup diameter. The incised geometric designs are deep, sharp (showing some wear from long use), and complex. A very collectible and displayable clyster.
